Message My dad has been a member of BMWCCA (I think that’s the acronym) for 12-13 years, and he has a little book in his glove box that has a list of all (OK, maybe just some) of the BMWCCA members all around the country.

It is broken down by state and then by names alphabetically if I remember. Next to each person’s name a contact phone number is one or more letters (from memory):

T (has tools)
G (has garage)
SB (has spare bedroom or couch)
+, ++, +++, etc (level of knowledge/skill)

Anyway, seems like there were lots more option, but I can’t remember them all. Point is, if your BMW takes a crap somewhere in another state, you pull out the book and look for members nearby. You can find someone with just some tools if all you need is a screwdriver and socket to fix a broken belt, or someone with an entire garage/shop that is willing to help you change your blown clutch so you don’t have to get raped at the dealer.

I think this would be a GREAT addition to this community, in which many of the members are already willing to go well out of their way to help others, and have lots of skills/tools.

Sure, we have members -> directory search, but it doesn’t give contact info, tools, skill level, etc. Not to mention, how many of us have access to the internet to pull up the directory and send an email while sitting on the side of the road?

I’m sure it would not be a minor undertaking, but some of the more active members with a lot of PC/IT experience could probably pull it off. Especially if there were instruction on where to send an email with your information, and what format it should be in (i.e. name first line, skip a space, phone #, skip a space Y/N for tools, etc, etc.) so the data could be gathered somewhat automatically without too much human intervention. Or even create a digital form for people to fill out and return so the data could be pulled easily. Then the list could be sent back to each person that emailed info in, so they could have access to the rest of the information and make sure theirs was entered correctly.

I guess there’d need to be some protection method to stop telemarketers getting the info, perhaps you have to be a stage III addict or something to be eligible?

Mike
